Work to clear landslides in Junction, St Mary to resume today
The National Works Agency (NWA) will resume work this morning to clear sections of the Junction main road in St Mary, which are being impacted by two major landslides caused by persistent heavy rains.
Yesterday, a NWA crew worked to clear the landslides which are in the vicinity of Broadgate and Mason Yard near Friendship Gap, respectively, which resulted in a halt in the movement of vehicular traffic for the better part of three hours.
Communication Manager at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said that the workers were experiencing challenges cleaning and clearing the roadways due to the soil, which keeps coming down, making it difficult to keep the roadway open to accommodate single lane traffic.
Shaw also said that the size of the landslides are also proving very challenging.
He said that the NWA team would have cleaned and cleared both roadways to facilitate single lane, but the material keeps tumbling down.
He noted that the conditions present some amount of danger, not only to the motoring public, but also to the work crews.
Shaw pointed out that the workers will return today with a view to see what further steps can be taken, which is to either have both corridors fully reopen, or to at least try and ensure that motorists are able to traverse the roadway in a single lane fashion.
Meantime, Member of Parliament for St Mary South East, Dr Norman Dunn, said that heavy rains have been affecting that section of the parish since Friday, which has resulted in several houses in the Dover area being flooded.
