Irwin High School mourns loss of student struck by Metro bus
The Irwin High School community is mourning the loss of one of their students who died after being struck by a Montego Bay Metro bus on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased girl has been identified as Deanna Solomon, a grade seven student.
The incident took place outside the compound shortly after school ended on Wednesday.
It was reported that Solomon sustained multiple broken bones and injuries as a result of the impact. She was transported to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday night.
News of the child's death has sent shockwaves across the school community, Nevin Nish, chairman of the Irwin High School board, told The STAR on Thursday morning.
“The entire school community is in deep shock and mourning as we face this devastating loss of one of our very promising grade 7 students Deanna Solomon. We ask for continued prayers and support in this another turbulent time for our school's mental strength,” said Nish.
“Exams are suspended as her classmates and the atmosphere is overwhelming at this difficult time,” he added.
Nish further sympathised with the child's parents.
“The school stands with the parents as we pray for comfort for the family. Words cannot express the gruelling grief and pain they have to endure at this time.”
