Danielle Rowe's killer gets life in prison
Former dental assistant Kayodi Satchell, who pleaded guilty to slashing eight-year-old Danielle Rowe's throat last year, was in tears this morning as she was sentenced to life in prison.
The 32-year-old child killer, who murdered the primary school student after allegedly contracting HIV from her father, was ordered by Justice Carolyn Tie-Powell to serve 27 years and four months in prison before being eligible for parole.
She was credited for time spent of one year and four months.
Satchell was also sentenced to six years and three months in prison but will also be credited for time spent in custody.
She was also given a 10 per cent discount for early plea.
The judge said anything more would have shocked the public's conscience.
Both sentences are to run concurrently.
Satchell, who admitted to murder and child stealing in September also broke down in tears.
The judge said the only appropriate sentence was life as the victim was stolen from school and killed in a brutal manner.
"It was heinous, it was savage, it was brutal and it was nonsensical," she said.
The second grade student of Braeton Primary and Infant School in St Catherine was abducted on June 8 last year from her school.
The child was later found with her throat slashed on Roosevelt Avenue in St Andrew.
She was rushed by persons in the area to the Bustamante Hospital for Children, where she died two days later.
The post mortem report revealed that the child died from an incised wound to the neck.
Investigations by the police led to Satchell being arrested on August 11 later that year.
She was subsequently charged with murder.
Attorneys Pierre Rogers and Donnovan Collins represented Satchell.
Attorney Matthew Hyatt was watching the proceedings for Rowe's mother Sudiene Mason.
