It is feared that a five-year-old girl is dead after being trapped in a house fire on White Hall Avenue in St Andrew this afternoon.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Randy Sweeney, divisional commander for the St Andrew North division told The STAR that the blaze started sometime after 2:00 p.m.

"It was reported to me that the mother of the child left her with the grandmother and went on the road and during that time a fire started, we cannot confirm the origin of the same. The fire started, the grandmother escaped from the house, and the child was trapped," he said.

Sweeney said firefighters are still on the scene conducting cooling down operations and up to 4:00 PM today, the child was still not removed from the rubble.
