Calabar crowned champs again

Defending champs Calabar High School recently ticked off win number four at Olympian Kenneth Edwards' Jamaica Superstars Martial Arts Open, effectively landing their fifth straight hold on the McKay Security Jamaica Taekwondo Association High School League.

Facing Jamaica College in the final bout at the University of Technology, Calabar got the better of their rivals and later learnt that they had won the overall title after it was announced that the Shai-Tai Kick-boxing Open, scheduled for this month, was called off.

Shai-Tai's cancellation left the title race to be decided on seven tournaments, of which Calabar won the first four, making them champions for the fifth consecutive season of the high school league, which started in 2006.

Despite Calabar's premature title win, sponsor Jason McKay said the remaining contests will still provide top-class displays among the champions, Kingston College, Jamaica College, St George's College, Wolmer's and newcomers Excelsior, coached by Joel Ellis.

"I don't believe the Calabar team is going to roll over and rest with the trophy at Red Hills Road. It's all about pride and bragging rights. Nobody wants to lose. You're only as good as your last fight," he said.
