Valiant effort from Powell not enough for men's 400m Olympic final
Jamaica's Jevaughn Powell put in a workmanlike effort in the men's 400-metre semi-final, but his fourth-place finish was not enough to see him through to the final.
Powell clocked a time of 44.91 seconds running out of lane nine in semi-final three that went to Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith who crossed the line in 44.07 seconds.
Grenadian Kirani James also punched his ticket to the final after winning semi-final two in a season's best time of 43.78 seconds, while American Quincy Hall took semi-final one in 43.95 seconds, ahead of Trinidadian Jereem Richards who qualified with a time of 44.33 seconds.
