JC, Glenmuir to battle for Champions Cup
Defending champions Glenmuir High School and Jamaica College advanced to the ISSA Champions Cup final, following contrasting wins in the semi-finals at the National Stadium yesterday.
The final will be played at the National Stadium on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m.
In yesterday's feature game, JC defeated Hydel High 1-0, while Glenmuir continued their impressive season with a 5-1 thumping of first-time semi-finalists Ocho Rios High.
Davion Ferguson, head coach of Jamaica College (JC), says he felt pleased after overcoming a tough opponent.
"It was a difficult game, we knew that Hydel has quality and they really pushed us," Ferguson said. "We wanted that second goal, it never came but we managed to keep a clear sheet and that's important."
Jabarie Howell netted JC's all-important goal in the 45th minute, his right-footed strike sneaking beyond the grasp of Hydel's custodian Idrian Robinson.
Devon Anderson, head coach of Hydel, explained that missed chances cost his team.
"Jamaica College capitalised on an error from our goalkeeper at the near post, while we got chances to score and failed. Goals win games and once you fail to score and your opponents do, you'll come out on the losing end," he explained.
OTHER SEMI-FINAL
Glenmuir produced a come-from-behind victory in the other semi-final courtesy of goals from Orel Miller (40th), Dunsting Cohen (42nd), Ronaldo Campbell (64th), Orane Watson (69th) and Nyron Allen (71st). Kaneil Brown scored for Ocho Rios at the 21st minute.
Andrew Peart, head coach of Glenmuir, stated that tactically his coaching staff were on point with their changes throughout the encounter. He added that getting back to another final is part of the team's target this season.
"I thought the start wasn't bad for us. At halftime we decided that we needed fresher players on the wings in order to find more spaces inside. Whichever stage of the game it is you need the clarity in mind to look at what's happening and then make a decision you feel will be beneficial towards the team," he reasoned.
"It's just another game and a step in our journey."
Ocho Rios High head coach Veron Peterkin shared that costly errors worked against his team.
"We made some errors that threw off our game but we can move forward. This is the first time they've made such errors as Glenmuir exploited what they saw and we didn't control that," he explained.
