Molynes sink Humble Lion with late strike
Rashawn Livingston's 89th-minute goal carried Molynes United FC to a 2-1 win over Humble Lion FC in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football match at Drewsland Mini Stadium last night.
James Thomas' 79th-minute goal had cancelled out Lincoln Thompson's own goal in the 32nd minute. But Livingston would ensure Molynes United walk away with all three points. The team moved one place up the table to ninth on 21 points.
"It was a tough one, and it was always going to be tough. They are a team fighting relegation and they are at the bottom of the table. So you would expect them to play like this. Changing coach in recent days brings performances like this. But we fought. There were some areas (in which) we could have done better. But at the end of the day we got three points, which is the most important thing, " said Molynes' coach Jermaine Thomas.
Humble Lion started brightly and had two great opportunities in the first five minutes, but Dashawn Plunkett and then Stephen Barnett both dragged their shots just wide of the mark.
Molynes tried to take control of the game. But it was Humble Lion who remained the more enterprising of the teams, and Afiba Chambers and Plunkett came close with headers in the 28th and 31st minutes, respectively.
However, against the run of play, Molynes took the lead when Thompson turned the ball past Peter Harrison into his own net from a corner.
Molynes grew in confidence after the goal and Peter McGregor went close to scoring a second, but his shot was cleared off the line.
Five minutes into the second half, Barnett was presented with a good chance but failed to make contact from eight yards. Tyreek Wilson responded for Molynes minutes later but his shot was inches away from the upright.
Humble Lion thought they had an equaliser in the 75th minute, but goalkeeper Darren Donaie reacted superbly to swat away Barnett's touch from a corner.
However, Humble Lion got the goal they deserved four minutes later when Livingston Walker's cross was met by a brave header from 36-year-old substitute Thomas.
Nevertheless, Livingston broke the Clarendon team's hearts a minute before regulation time, when he slotted home after [pouncing on a through ball from Jason Wright.
Humble Lion had a good claim for a penalty in added time, after Chambers was brought down by schoolboy Kwayne Thompson in the 89th minute but no call was given.
New Humble Lion coach, Alex Thomas, who replaced Donovan Duckie and did not have a training session with the team before the match, was pleased with the effort from his team.
"It didn't fall our way today (Monday), but I am really pleased with the team. They showed they can display good football, they did well. Unfortunately, we didn't get that penalty. But that is the nature of the sport. They did well. Going back to the training pitch we will fix things going forward," he said.
Humble Lion stayed at the foot of the table with 14 points.
