How much tithes I should give?
Dear Pastor,
I am writing to you for a second time. I have more than one problem that I need your help with. In everything, I put God first, so I want you to help me with this one.
I have been a Christian for about six months. I don't know if I am doing the right thing. I know that it is important to give tithes and an offering, and I try my best to do so.
I wanted to ask my pastor, but I don't feel like asking him because I don't want him to know that I am not sure about how much I should tithe.
I know it should be one-tenth of my earnings. Pastor, I am not sure if it is before or after taxes are drawn from my salary.
I remember finding it difficult to tithe. I told my wife and she said it was okay. She said that God would understand. Pastor, deep down I felt guilty. I felt as if I was robbing God.
Even when I tithe, I also give my offering. I believe in giving to receive from God.
Whenever I am in need, God has always supplied my needs. I am a blessed child of God and my help cometh from the Lord.
J.M.
Dear J.M.,
Whatever I say, some folks will agree, and others will disagree. Tithing was an Old Testament commandment. Believers were encouraged to tithe everything that they owned.
I suggest that you study the 'Law As It Relates To Tithing' in the books of Leviticus, 27:30, 18:26; and Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5. In the New Testament, tithing is not mentioned at all.
I do not wish for anyone to accuse me of discouraging folks from tithing, but I have to be true to scripture. Tithing is between the believer and God. That is how I understand the Bible on this matter.
If I am wrong, may God forgive me.
Pastor
