Dear Pastor,

My doctor said I am too fat and might find it difficult to have children. I am 23 and very fat.

I have a boyfriend. He wants us to have a child, but told me he is afraid I may not to be able to have children, and he might have to continue to 'run the road'.

I like him, but told him he might 'run the road,' if he wants, to whether I am fat or not. It means he is not willing to settle down. We tried to have sex. He had a hard time dealing with me. My stomach was too big and his penis was too short.

My doctor said I need to go on a diet. My boyfriend hardly comes around these days. Whenever I call him, he asks about my diet. Is it true people who are fat have more difficulty becoming pregnant?

T.T.

Dear T.T.,

Every patient should follow the advice of his or her doctor. The doctor said you were overweight. You should believe him. He also told you overweight women may find it difficult to become pregnant.

You have a boyfriend who told you he would love for you to become pregnant, but you are obese. You give the impression you were trying to have sex with him because he desperately wanted to see whether you could become pregnant.

I am not going to encourage you to try to become pregnant, but I do know you should listen to your doctor.

According to yourfertility.org.au, "If you're trying to get pregnant, or intend to start trying, know that being overweight - especially significantly so - can affect your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby. If you are overweight and planning to get pregnant in the next year or few years, you might commit to a healthy eating and regular exercise plan. Losing even a few kilos can make a difference. The father's weight can also affect your chances of getting pregnant."

Get Pregnant Now Facebook page states that "Women who are overweight or obese have less chance of getting pregnant overall. They are also more likely than women of healthy weight to take more than a year to get pregnant."

"The risk of pre-eclampsia doubles in overweight women and triples in obese women. Overweight women have twice the risk of gestational (pregnancy-related) diabetes and obese women eight times the risk, compared with women of healthy weight."

"A woman who is obese is more than twice as likely to have a miscarriage as a woman of healthy weight. There is twice the risk that her baby will not survive."

"Infants born to obese women are more likely to be large for their age, need neonatal intensive care or have a congenital abnormality."

Even if your boyfriend does not marry you, you have to be concerned about your health. If you know you are grossly overweight, stick with the advice of your doctor.
