Shunned because I am a foreigner

April 16, 2020

Dear Pastor,

I am a British citizen, but I was born in Jamaica. I sometimes listen to your programme. To be honest, there are so many things I would like to say.

I have been in Jamaica since early September 2019. I live in Ocho Rios. I know I didn't come to Jamaica with any virus or other illness.

When I came I was treated well, as many of the people love my English accent. I was treated better than bread and butter. In London, that means 'very well'.

I am here for various reasons and it is too long to explain. But one of the main reasons is to finish my house. But because of the coronavirus, everything has to be on hold.

I am getting some bad vibes now, as I am being treated as if I was the one who brought the virus to Jamaica.

I am so disappointed with some of the people, as they sometimes drop comments which suggest that I brought over this virus because I am British.

I have been coming to Jamaica three times per year since 2002 and I love my country. And I am hoping to retire here because I have worked hard in London in the Christian social services.

Well, I am keeping a low profile and following the guidelines to keep myself safe. I hope that this nightmare will end soon. It appears that I could be stuck here.

I am expecting to go back to London in May, but at the moment I don't feel as if I will be able to return as there might not be any outgoing flights.

I do feel safer to stay here at the present time.

Please, pray for me, as I am alone. I do have lots of friends and family members all over the world. I love my country and I couldn't be in a better place.

I am a Christian, but at the moment, all churches are closed, but I listen to religious services on the television. Please keep yourself safe and keep up the good work. God bless you.

V.

Dear V.,

I am sure that it is not too late for me to say to you, 'Welcome home'. Although you have been living abroad, you consider Jamaica your home.

You love your country and that is why you have been trying to build a house so that you can retire and live in your homeland.

God has blessed you, so give him thanks.

You know that the people in the area where you are building your house were always welcoming and treated you well.

However, the coronavirus has changed that. I am sure that many do not mean what they say about you. So, don't take what they are saying to heart.

I hope that very soon you will be able to travel again. In the meantime, keep strong, read your Bible and meditate. Call friends whenever you are able to do so. Feel free to write to me again. I will be praying for you.
