Think my man is too old

August 18, 2021

Dear Pastor,

I am 22 years old and I have had three different boyfriends. I have been friendly with a man for one and a half years. This is the longest relationship that I have been in.

I love him because nothing bothers him. Since coming to live with him, he has taught me to cook because cooking is not something I learned to do. I grew up with my mother and only sister and we did not cook at home. My mother was a helper and where she was working, her boss allowed her to take some of the food for her lunch and she did not eat it. She brought it home and divided it for my sister and myself. My first boyfriend used to buy chicken and hamburgers for me and for breakfast we ate bread and butter. That relationship broke up because I had needs and my boyfriend was not giving me much money so I got involved with another man. My second boyfriend could not keep his hands at his side. Any fuss we had he would slap me. I told him that I would kill him and give up myself to the police if he lifted his hand to me again. I met a man on Facebook. He was always saying how he wanted to meet me, so I took a chance and met with him but he was not the type of man I would like. One day I was coming from evening class and I stood up at the bus stop and a car drove up and the driver asked me if I wanted a ride and I said yes. We got to know each other and now we are living together. He told me he was living with a woman but she cheated on him so he put her out.

The only problem I am having with him now is that he is almost 30 years old and he doesn't have children and he would like to have children. I told him that I am not ready for that. This man gives me money every week and he takes me to the supermarket and he tells me to pick up whatever I want us to have. When I told my mother how well this man treats me she told me to hold on to him. When my mother was meeting him for the first time, Pastor, you should have seen how my mother dressed up and he cooked oxtail and chicken with rice and peas. He told my mother that I am the one who cooked. The house that we are living in is up for sale and my boyfriend's parents who are living in Canada plan to assist him to buy the house. They wanted him to leave Jamaica but he is not interested in living abroad. Sometimes I think he is too soft but nothing bothers him. Do you think he is a little too old for me?

B.

Dear B.,

Make me first address whether I think this man is too old for you. In my humble opinion, he is not and you should be happy he has come into your life. He is treating you very well and teaching you how to cook. I am glad that your mother loves him and I hope that you will be true to him. Make sure you get a good education and try your very best not to get involved with any other man. All the best to you.
