Counselling for police after sergeant's death

THE STAR understands that the chaplain of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is to meet with the staff at Spanish Town police station where grief counselling will be provided following the death of sergeant Mervin Ellington.

Members of the for who are attached to the station were plunged into mourning after Ellington died in a vehicular mishap.

His private motor vehicle crashed into a river in Riversdale, St Catherine on Monday night.

Reports from the St Catherine North traffic department is that Ellington was driving along the main thoroughfare from Riversdale to Bog Walk when he encountered a breakaway.

While attempting to negotiate the roadway his car fell into the river and submerged.

Residents managed to pull the policeman from the motor vehicle. He was rushed to the Linstead hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was described as a hardworking and dedicated crime fighter.

Member of Parliament for North Central St Catherine, Natalie Neita has since expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of Ellington and has noted the lack of attention to the state of the roadway.
