Lady Saw denies rumours about feeding programme

Dancehall artiste Lady Saw has dispelled rumours that her efforts to feed the poor in downtown Kingston last Friday were stopped by the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC).

"I was not approached by any of them (employees of the KSAC) personally, but I was being warned by persons not to feed them there, so I had to be very discrete about it," she said.

"After being warned, I kept wondering if there was a policy surrounding how to feed them and, since Friday, I have been asking about a facility I could call to make arrangements with to continue my programme."

She told THE STAR that she doesn't intend to stop feeding the homeless, but wants to go about it the right way. "I was just trying to reach them (the homeless) where they are. I didn't know that there was a specific way to do it, but I will be in touch with the KSAC to work out a plan on how to move forward."

Inspector of the Poor Elaine Walker explained that over the years, for hygienic reasons, they have had to issue cease and desist orders when it comes to feeding the homeless on the streets.

She said there is a central location on 65 Hanover Street, downtown Kingston, where the homeless go for meals, a shower and a place to sleep when they need it. She encouraged persons to get in touch with her if they have plans to feed the homeless so they can make the necessary arrangements.

In addition to her programme for feeding the homeless, Saw is also working closely with Galina Primary and Infant School. The entertainer recently contributed new computers to the institution but said a lot more needs to be done.

"I have been helping them out, giving them computers and other supplies, but they need additional help and I want corporate Jamaica to get on board," she said.

"They need help with refurbishing parts of the school and support from corporate Jamaica would go a long way."

Lady Saw said she is recording new material. The 'Queen of the Dancehall' plans to release some new songs soon.
