Spice gets closer to big screen dreams - Dancehall artiste overjoyed after Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta wins film award

Dancehall artiste Spice is no stranger to award ceremony stages, having received several nominations and wins for her musical contributions to the entertainment industry in Jamaica. But now the megastar has added film award winner to her list of accomplishments.

Spice was one of four cast members of VH1's Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta ( LHHATL) that represented franchise at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards ceremony held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Sunday. The show was aired last night.

LHHATL is the second instalment of the reality television franchise that premiered seven years ago, but it is the dancehall entertainer's second consecutive season on the series.

In a state of euphoria following the ceremony, Spice told THE STAR: "I feel elated to have had this opportunity because when I first joined Love & Hip Hop some persons questioned my reasons for doing so knowing of its controversial nature and even said it would have damaged my brand. Instead it has propelled me and my music to a whole new audience."

The reality TV show was up against Jersey Shore, The Bachelor, Vanderpump Rules and The Challenge for the newly established 'Best Reality Royalty' category. And when the time came to announce the winner, the VH1 show gave the other nominees a run for their money, as LHHATL came out as a winner, with Spice stepping up to accept the award alongside co-stars Karlie Redd, Bambi and Lil Scrappy.

When she took the stage in her signature blue hair and a bold yellow gown that was done by Atlanta designer Shalay, Spice did not think twice about giving the audience a taste of the authentic Jamaican dancehall flavour that she portrays on the reality series. She had the guests in awe when she delivered the acceptance speech in patois on mainstream media.

The Black Hypocrisy artiste previously told THE STAR that acting is one of her first loves and that she already has used some of what she learnt during her stint at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and The Ashe Company during her stage performances and in the cameo role she played in the 2014 movie Destiny, which also featured fellow dancehall entertainer Christopher Martin and veteran actor Munair Zacca.

But with an MTV Movie & TV Award under her belt, the entertainer believes she can take a career in acting to monumental heights.

"It will open up more doors for me in the movie world," she told THE STAR. "Everyone wants to broaden their fan base. I just chose to do it a bit differently, and the award proves naysayers wrong. It shows I know exactly what I am doing. At least they now see the bigger opportunities that awaits in the future."
