Bridgetown, Barbados:

The historic Blackwoods Screw Docks, the only remaining screw dock of its kind in existence in the world, was the backdrop for Medz, one of the Crop Over festival events, last Friday.

The docks have become a popular venue for events because of the native appeal and as an edutainment structure in the middle of Bridgetown's busy harbour area.

As the partygoers took a walk through history on entering the premises, the atmosphere changed from wanting to grab a drink at the bar to learning more about the rich and vibrant history.

For partygoers who were interested in learning more about the venue, the afternoon started out as a self-tour of the electric motor house.

It is furnished with bits and pieces of the screw dock's story on signboards along the entrance walkway, and takes each person past the Blackwoods Tavern, through a large wooden gate over a small cross bridge right into the middle of party.

There the sounds of soca instantly hit the eardrums, getting persons into the groove, moving from the simple finding a corner to 'hol' a medz' energy, to finding a dance partner (if you never had one before) to party with.

It was a small, though powerful turnout, many of whom were dressed casually chic for the daytime Crop Over event, which has also hosted previous stagings in Miami, Trinidad and in Jamaica during the carnival season as a boat ride fete.

The majority of the partygoers seemed to enjoy the musical stylings of DJs Steelie Back and Sinistar of Miami Dream Team, and popular radio announcer and selector Blvqrose Supreme.

They partied while watching the sun go down on the horizon, the event closing off a little after sunset.
