Coming off the high of having Nicki Minaj become her mentor and co-sign her music, Starr Dawkinz is dealing with backlash over her new single Sponsor.

She said that the song, in which she calls the names of various artistes in imaginary sexual scenarios with her, is a tribute to dancehall, and she was only trying to 'big up' the artistes, "not to slander anybody."

Starr Dawkinz admitted that producer IzyBeats said "if anyone, that Kartel and Jada [Kingdom] probably would have an issue". And he seems to have predicted right as fans of both artistes are up in arms. In the song, Starr Dawkinz implores the 'Worl Boss' to give her oral sex, while implying that Jada Kingdom does not have enough money to entice her.

Starr Dawkinz explained that the idea for the song came after rapper Yung Miami of the duo City Girls dropped a song called RapFreaks. She also noted that Nicki Minaj did a similar single some years ago.

"So, I was like why nobody doing this in dancehall? When I looked back, I was like, look like only Ce'Cile did brave enough to do this and this was exactly 20 years ago with her song Changes," said Starr Dawkinz. She said that Sponsor was only creative expression.

"The only person can cancel me is God. Everything is already working out for me and if God gave creativity to me, it is not from a malicious, evil or bad mind place I have to come out strong as a new artiste," she explained. "I was saying to Kartel, before you die, yuh fi try eat some p***y. You been going against it, but before you die, taste the 'Cookie Wash' once. In all fairness, it was just fun and joke. I don't want to engage in any type of relationship with any of the people I mentioned."

Meanwhile, Ce'Cile believes that "a real bad gyal ting Starr come with".

"First thing I listen to is technicality to see if it is a good production and then how she flows. I moved to the lyrical content and immediately started laughing. She clearly knows the purpose of the song and I am sure she is prepared for whatever comes with it," she said. Ce'Cile also advised Starr Dawkinz that there's no escaping backlash.

"Some people going to feel you have disrespected their artiste, is either you deal with it or don't do it," she said. "I remember people saying 'yuh diss di don Bounty' to me [in Changes]. This being 20 years after my time, of course Starr had to go harder. The culture has changed and her generation is talking about the topics she has mentioned, all she did was attach it to some names. The song for me is nice. I like it and I think it's a good upgrade," she said.
