Growing up in West Kingston has taught G Garrison how to survive difficult circumstances and persistence.

The recording artiste has been pursuing a career in music since 2007, but he said that all those years were dedicated to learning the ins and outs of the business.

"While challenges exist in the street, I can't say that I've met on nuh great challenge in the music industry. I've just been keeping the focus on music because me see seh every day yuh learn something new," G Garrison told THE STAR. "When yuh ah young artiste, just ah start out, yuh cyaa seh yuh know the business. After gaining some knowledge, meanwhile ah build my audience, that's when me start treat it like a business and trust me, it ah get intense now."

In 2012, he tried unsuccessfully to compete in the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition, but has appeared in smaller showcases like Konsequence Muzik's Open Mic, which used to be held weekly at the label's Constant Spring studio.

"It helped to build my confidence and improve on his performance style," said G Garrison. "With my social media presence amplified over the past two years, people have been really offering useful criticism and saying great things about my music. So, for this year and into the coming years, I see myself blowing up across all the dancehall spaces in Jamaica and in the four corners of the earth ... trust me, I'm gonna be the next big thing."

Born Romaine Thompson, his stage name was something he adopted in the streets. G Garrison is still promoting his debut EP, Life Concept. The project features a collaboration with up-and-coming artiste Jahlani, titled Loyalty, which was recorded in 2020, and there are plans for other collaborations, he said. Despite a low number of views on YouTube, the single Dem Nuh Real, produced by Andrew Martin of Pleasure Bunch Records, is also popular in the streets.

But G Garrison does not want to be associated only with dancehall, as he is influenced by the sounds of rapper Eminem and R&B songstress Mariah Carey.

"I never specialised which music I would stick to, me love music on a whole. I would love to collaborate with Bounty Killer, he is the general, and Vybz Kartel, the lyrical genius. Them mentor and produce most of the stars in the business. I do see myself working with them in the future and if I could reach to the heights of my international favourites, then why not?" he said.
