DJ Michelle calls for respect for female selectors
DJ Michelle is calling on male promoters and stakeholders in the entertainment industry to show more "respect" for female selectors.
Speaking at an event last Thursday in Cassia Park, St Andrew, DJ Michelle told THE STAR, "The promoters of entertainment events must give more females a chance to showcase our talents. We are capable of bringing the music, so give us that opportunity to strive and be successful in the music industry."
She added "I operate a sound system called Spoil You, and most of my bookings are in the rural parishes, and I am just appealing to all the powers that be to put in place a policy that promotes female disc jocks presence in the industry."
Her musical inspiration comes from dancehall veteran Spice.
"People always say I look like Spice, and it's an honour for me to look like an artiste who is my mentor. What I like about Spice the artiste, is that she's down-to-earth and she speaks her mind. She's an inspiration to a lot of females, and I just love her flow."
DJ Michelle, given name Michelle Dobney, was celebrating her birthday two days early at the Cassia Park event. Among those showing up to celebrate were '90s artiste Jus Chris; Presidential, formerly of Monster Shack crew; and Big Head, the British Saturdays boss.
