Man steals 50 gran worth of grocery

A man who broke into a house and stole $50,000 worth of grocery has landed in more trouble after police reportedly recovered contraband from his jail cell.

Romain Simpson yesterday pleaded guilty to housebreaking and larceny when he appeared before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court.

He also pleaded guilty to introducing contraband in a lock up after police found a bag containing tobacco, rizzla, lighter and vegetable matter resembling ganja in his cell. He was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment at hard labour.

He will be sentenced on May 10 for the house-breaking offence. In relation to that charge, the court heard that on February 7, at 9:45 p.m., Simpson broke into a house in the Bull Bay area and stole a laptop and the groceries. Reports are that the owner of the house watched him while he broke in and kept an eye on him until he left the premises.

Meanwhile, Simpson complained about an injury to his leg that has developed into a sore. He told the court that the police have been reluctant to take him for treatment.

"Your Honour, mi haffi a beg the police dem fi bring me go doctor," he said.

Parish Judge Chester Crooks ordered that Simpson be given medical attention. He also ordered a social-enquiry report in order to guide him in sentencing the crook.
