A Christian woman who left school with only one subject says she feels compelled to share her story of triumph even as she continues her personal development.

Vanessa Watt, 27, told THE STAR that her journey has been inspired by her Christian faith and relationship with God.

At the end of high school, Watt said she had only attained a pass in visual arts.

“The main reason for that was that I got caught up in bad company and was part of a gang. I lagged behind in school and paid less attention to school work,” Watt said.

The former Seaforth High student said she struggled to maintain a 40 per cent average in school, so she was not surprised that she hardly made an impression when she first sat exams administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

“I finished with only one subject and said to myself that I can’t continue along this course. I took matters in my own hands and went back and did two and passed and did more and passed. I was finished with CXC and wanted more.”

Watt went on to complete certification courses in supervisory management, counselling, and a secretarial qualifying exam.

She is currently employed to the St Thomas Municipal Corporation as a secretary in the Poor Relief Department.

“I want to encourage students who finish school with one subject or no subject that there is hope. Don’t sit back and relax,” she said.

Watt is hoping that her story can be the beacon of hope to positively influence young people.

“I want to become a social worker. I am presently in my second year reading for a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work, and I am also doing a minor in guidance and counselling. I intend to do my master’s in counselling psychology,” she said.
