Four unidentified men were shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with the police at the intersection of Charles and King streets in downtown Kingston on Wednesday morning.

The police say five illegal guns were also seized in the incident.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. after a police team responded to reports of a shooting.

The alleged gunmen were travelling in a Toyota Isis with six men aboard when the vehicle was reportedly signalled to stop, but the driver disobeyed.

Men reportedly alighted from the vehicle and opened fire, which was returned.

During the exchange, a constable from the Kingston West Division sustained gunshots wound to the hand. He is currently stable and receiving treatment in hospital.

The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) and the Inspectorate Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) have been notified.
