Man pays dearly for destroying girlfriend’s TV
For the second time in two weeks, a Kingston man will have to shell out more than $100,000 to purchase a television set for his girlfriend.
The man, Irvine Edwards, found himself in hot water after he broke his girlfriend's television following a dispute at her home.
Police reports state that Edwards threw the complainant's 55-inch flat-screen television over a wall and then threw a building block on it.
Edwards pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on December 7.
Edwards indicated that he was in a relationship with the complainant for six and half years and warned her not to attend illegal nightly parties, as they would be in breach of the Disaster Risk Management Act and would put her at risk of contracting the novel coronavirus.
In an attempt to appease his girlfriend, Edwards bought a new TV to replaced the damaged one. However, she rejected it, saying it did not have the Bluetooth feature like her previous device.
The complainant said that the cost for her TCL television set, which was taken out on hire purchase, was $243,236.81. The replacement TV that Edwards bought cost $95,000.
The court heard further that this was the second TV for the complainant that Edwards destroyed this year.
"Miss, I want you to be comfortable. You would want your TV to watch Christmas movies. Sir, what is wrong with you and TV? This is the second TV you mash up for her?", Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague commented.
Edwards agreed to buy a new 55-inch TCL flat-screen television for the complainant and had it to her by January 3, 2022.
"Miss, I want to ensure that you get exactly that which was damaged and that you don't leave with less than what you got. I don't want when you reach home that you realise your TV does not have Bluetooth, different things bring people comfort," Cole-Montague said.
