Waterford seniors get pre-Valentine’s pampering
Some 150 seniors in St Catherine turned up at the Waterford Community Centre on Saturday, where they were pampered by personal grooming professionals and politicians during the 7th staging of the annual Waterford pre-Valentine's senior citizens' care programme.
Waterford Councillor Fenley Douglas, Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas, and Independence City Councillor Courtney Edwards joined volunteer barbers and cosmetologists who styled the seniors. Douglas and Thomas are members of the People's National Party, while Edwards is a member of the Jamaica Labour Party.
Females were treated to manicures, pedicures, and hair treatment and styling, while the men received haircut and pedicures.
One of the beneficiaries, Iris Hamilton, who is wheelchair dependent, said she was determined not to miss the treat. She said that having benefited last year, she knew she would have been pampered.
"I enjoyed every minute of the care and affection I received," she said. "This is the kind of care that I would have to put out thousands of dollars to get anywhere else," Hamilton added.
Garnet Brown, who was there for the first time, was impressed with the trim and shave he received.
"I don't have words to describe the love and attention that I get. This kind of personal care is worth a lot of money. I thank Mr Douglas and all the other people who made this possible," Brown said.
For his part, Douglas told THE STAR, "This is the least we can do as their servants to show our seniors that we care.
"Not all of our senior citizens can afford to go to a hairstylist or get their nails done, so it is a pleasure for us to treat them for Valentine's Day," the councillor said.
