Road deaths on the decline
The Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport is calling for increased caution when traversing the roadways, despite road crashes and fatalities trending down.
Fatalities have decreased by 16 per cent, while fatal crashes have decreased by 20 per cent when compared with the similar period in 2022.
As at August 8, some 238 lives have been lost to road crashes, resulting from 219 fatal collisions.
A staggering 488 road fatalities occurred on the nation's roadways last year.
Director of the Road Safety Unit, Deidrie Hudson-Sinclair, is reminding all road users to obey the rules of the road and take caution at all times.
"Motor cyclists and motorists must ensure they use proper protective equipment when traversing the roadways, and stick to the speed limits in the different areas. Pedestrians must remember to look right, then left, then right again, and use safe places to cross. They should also wear light or bright clothing at nights and walk facing the oncoming traffic," she said.
