The police have announced that 18 persons from the community of Gregory Park in Portmore, St Catherine have been taken into custody following an operation in the area on Wednesday.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Stephanie Lindsay, two firearms were also seized during the operation, for which two persons have been charged.

News of a major fire, believed to have been started by arsonists, rocked Jamaica last weekend after it was reported that over 40 persons, including children, were left homeless following the incident.

“They (the police) also have three of the persons who were named as persons of interest in relation to the fire incident. They are now in police custody and the investigations will continue,” Lindsay said.

Lindsay also mentioned that a part of today's operation was to provide relief to residents in the area.

“The feedback from the community, although some of them are not talking, some of them will express silently how pleased they are to see the security forces. Other will show a sigh of relief,” she said.
