Nekeisha Burchell thankful for Popcaan’s support
Nekeisha Burchell, the People's National Party (PNP) standard-bearer for St James South, says Popcaan's performance at her conference on Sunday should be viewed as a "pat on the back" from a good friend and not an endorsement.
"Popcaan coming to perform at my conference was a surprise, because he's a friend and he came out to show support as he knows the hard work I've put into this project," Burchell told THE STAR.
Popcaan made a dazzling cameo appearance at Burchell's conference, delivering his megahit Family to a receptive and enthusiastic audience. Adding to the excitement, he also shared the stage with Shane O, igniting the crowd before their departure. The artistes did not endorse Burchell's campaign and neither did they make any gestures or comment that could be construed as partisan support for her or the PNP.
Burchell, a deputy general secretary for the PNP, is seeking to return St James South to the folds of the party. It is currently represented in the House of Representatives by the Jamaica Labour Party's Homer Davis. The PNP, through Derrick Kellier, held the seat for 31 consecutive years, from 1989 to 2020, when Davis ended the reign of the socialists.
Davies won the seat by 1,950 votes in an election in which 42 per cent of the persons voted.
Burchell, who has expressed confidence in winning the seat for the PNP, said Popcaan's performance had nothing to do with helping her to win support from the voters.
With confidence in her own abilities and the backing of her friend Popcaan, Burchell concluded, "I could never waste a friendship or such a special treat from Popcaan for securing voters' support. That is my job, and I believe my chances are good."
