Hanover residents protest poor roads, water troubles
Residents from several communities across Hanover this morning blocked sections of the main road leading from Shettlewood to Mackfield in protest.
The residents, who began protesting as early as 4:00 a.m., say they are tired of the poor road conditions they have been forced to traverse daily.
Debris such as down trees, stones, drums, among other things, are currently blocking the stretch of road and preventing the safe passage of motorists.
Greg Oates, chairman of the People's National Party Hanover Eastern constituency supports the position taken by the residents, while urging prime Minister Andrew Holness to intervene.
"If you traverse this section of the road, it is disgraceful, this is the highway that connects the south coast, Montego Bay to Sav, [and] also to St Elizabeth," Oates told The STAR.
He also said that not only has Hanover has been neglected, but that the parish is deserving of the prosperity they were promised.
Outside of poor road conditions Oates says water is a major concern for the residents in these communities.
"These residents have been deprived of phone service, water and roads. It's as if they have been forgotten, they are in an oasis all to themselves and you can see the level of frustration," he added.
