Cabbie accused of assaulting cop

November 10, 2023

Passengers who were aboard a speeding taxi have signalled their intention to give evidence in court, refuting claims that the driver had assaulted a member of the police force.

This was shared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday by attorney-at-law Orville Morgan.

"Those passengers said any time this matter is set for trial, they are willing to attend and deny the allegations," Morgan told the court.

Morgan represents Everol Williams, who is charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a constable. The court heard that Williams was signalled to stop by the police, but continued driving with passengers aboard the vehicle. It is alleged that the passengers opened the door, threatening to jump out of the speeding vehicle. It was then that Williams stopped the vehicle. However, while he was being apprehended, he is alleged to have assaulted the police.

The matter, which was heard before Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque, was adjourned until January 31, 2024, for the file to be completed and for the complainant to attend.
