Barbados jolted by earthquake

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled parts of Barbados on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

The Trinidad-based University of the west Indies (UWWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC),which occurred at 11.26 am (local time) was felt 24 kilometres (km) southwest of the capital, Bridgetown.

The quake was also felt 160 km east of Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines and 179 km south east of Castries in St. Lucia.

It had a depth of 25.8 km and the authorities here said that there is “no tsunami threat from this earthquake to Barbados based on available data,” adding “there are no impacts expected in our area.

“Safely continue on your normal activities for the day.- No need for any panic at this point,” the authorities added.
