Man allegedly runs sweet potato scam

An attorney-at-law has expressed reservations that his client may not survive in custody, as he suffers with severe mental distress and a respiratory illness.

The lawyer presented those arguments to the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Monday as he sought to have bail offered to his client, Romario Edwards, who is charged on an indictment for obtaining money by means of false pretence. It is alleged that Edwards proffered himself to be an agent of the Rural Agricultural Developmental Authority who was able to supply licences for the complainant.

Prosecutors contend further that Edwards shared that he is a businessman in the sweet potato business and guaranteed the complainant big returns should they invest. It is alleged that the complainant purchased 500 pounds of the ground provision but is yet to receive their returns.

"Your Honour, Mr Edwards has indicated to be me that he has a respiratory illness and experiences mental distress and doesn't think he will survive in custody," the lawyer submitted.

However, the submissions were not accepted by the Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque, who made an order for Edwards to receive medical attention.

The matter was adjourned until January 10, 2024 for file completion. Edwards was remanded in custody until then and was made the subject of a fingerprint order. - T.T.
