Mother allegedly leaves children at home for days

December 08, 2023

A Corporate Area woman has been allowed time to settle her legal representation, as she is charged for leaving her underage children alone at home for three days.

The mother is to answer to two counts of child neglect when she returns to the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on March 5, 2024. It is alleged that on October 19, she left her one- and three-year-old sons at home with her 13-year-old son. She returned home on October 21.

However, the woman explained to presiding Judge Carlo Mason that the children were left in the care of her mother.

"Your Honour, the police and persons from the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, from their investigations said that the mother is disabled. She is wheelchair-bound and is not able to properly care for the children," the prosecutor detailed.

Clarke insisted that her mother is not reliant on the wheelchair and only uses it when the pain in her legs is too much.

"Only when her foot act up on her she use the wheelchair. It's not often," the woman stressed. The matter was then adjourned.
