The Elsa Leo-Rhynie Hall at The University of the West Indies (UWI) hosted its second annual 'Trashionista' event on Wednesday, under the theme 'Haus of Elsa: A Pioneer Through the Decades'.

The event, which was described as turning 'Trash to Fash' is dedicated to honouring the visionary Professor Leo-Rhynie, former principal of The UWI Mona campus. The event underscored the crucial connection between sustainable fashion and environmental consciousness. Initiated as a platform to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and responsible consumer choices, the Trashionista showcased innovative approaches to fashion by repurposing trash into stylish garments. Residents of the hall, known for their commitment to innovation and social responsibility, seized the opportunity to promote eco-friendly fashion choices and advocate for environmental stewardship.

Jamaica's strides towards eco-friendliness were evident in the designs, with the bans on single-use plastic bags and straws, implemented in 2019. Among the designs were swimwear made with shopping bags that replaced the plastic. But the highlight of the event was the competition, featuring four categories: swimwear, avant-garde, formal attire, and a unique twist on casual and professional wear. Tower 5, named the 'Tower of Might Dragons', made a resounding statement by clinching the top spot in the competition. Tower 5's innovative designs captivated the audience and judges alike, securing their victory. Tower of Apollo followed closely in second place, with Tower of Phoenix securing the third spot.

Organised by resident advisers Jevaughn Gordon, Shameka McKenzie and Trisanna Wilson, with support from Bertram Anderson, student services development manager, and Erica Harris, senior advisor, the event marked the culmination of week-long celebrations commemorating the 11th anniversary of the hall.

The Trashionista event not only showcased the creative potential of sustainable fashion but also served as a strong reminder of the importance of environmental responsibility in the fashion industry. They reused the shopping bags, coconut shells, garbage bags, gloves, spoons and even cups to make their outfits. As attendees marvelled at the ingenuity on display, they were reminded that fashion can be both stylish and sustainable and that some of these outfits are actually wearable.
