Artists invited to create landmark NMIA mural
Local artists are being invited to design a striking mural for the gateway to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.
The initiative, spearheaded by PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL), operators of the airport, aims to turn the recently renovated roundabout into a visually captivating landmark that embodies the city's vibrant spirit.
Jamaican artists have been invited to create an iconic mural that will welcome visitors to Kingston and leave a lasting impression on departing travellers. When complete, the mural will adorn massive three-dimensional letters spelling 'KINGSTON' and 'NMIA', each standing six feet tall on a concrete base. The artwork is expected to reflect Kingston's rich cultural heritage, from its world-renowned reggae and dancehall roots to its dynamic urban life and historic landmarks.
Sitara English-Byfield, CEO of PACKAL, said that by commissioning this work from a local artist, the airport operators are further supporting Jamaica's creative industry "while ensuring that our gateway truly reflects authentic Jamaican culture and creativity".
"We're very excited about this art project, as it represents more than beautification. It's about creating a powerful first and last impression of Kingston that captures our city's vibrant spirit," English-Byfield said.
Kingston Creative, the entity behind the regeneration of downtown Kingston through empowering and nurturing artists, has partnered with PACKAL on the project.
"Commissioning a Jamaican artist to create a mural at such an iconic landmark like the Kingston airport roundabout fills us with pride. As the gateway to our island, this project will enhance nation branding by showcasing Jamaica's rich artistic talent to the world. We eagerly invite all visual artists to participate and are excited to see the brilliance of their creativity," said Andrea Dempster Chung, executive director of Kingston Creative.
