Allow students to wear jackets and give them warm beverages, MOE tells schools amid cold front
Given the cooler temperatures experienced across Jamaica over the past few days due to a cold front, the Ministry of Education has stepped in to advise schools that students should be allowed to wear jackets to classes.
The cold front has brought a drop in temperatures, gusty winds, and rainfall to sections of the island.
In a bulletin issued to schools, the Ministry encouraged a relaxation of dress codes related to jackets, allowing students to wear any appropriate and warm outerwear.
"This includes jackets that are not part of the standard school uniform but are suitable for cold weather."
The Ministry noted that it is important for all students to feel comfortable, particularly as weather conditions can affect concentration and overall well-being.
"Keep in mind that some students may have existing health conditions that the colder weather could exacerbate. We urge you to be observant and attentive to these students, ensuring they have what they need to remain warm and comfortable."
The education ministry is also encouraging schools to implement additional measures to help keep students warm and comfortable.
It suggested that schools offer warm beverages or soups as part of their lunchtime meal offerings. "These should be served at a temperature that is safe for consumption, providing comfort without risking any harm."
Additionally, given the colder temperatures, the Ministry recommended that school administrators allow more frequent bathroom breaks for students as needed.
"The strong cold front impacting us presents both a challenge and an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the well-being of our students. As school administrators, it is crucial to remember our duty of care as mandated by the Child Care and Protection Act, which calls for a nurturing and protective environment for all children in our care. We must approach each child with the same love and consideration we would extend to our own, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and comfortable in their learning environment. Let us work together to create a safe, warm, and inviting environment for all our children, enabling them to flourish even in adverse weather conditions. Thank you for your continued commitment to the welfare of our children."
