Cottrell bags two wickets but Patriots fall short
Jamaican pacer Sheldon Cottrell put in a workmanlike performance with the ball, however, his St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots could not get over the line with the bat, as they went down by six runs to defending champions Barbados Tridents in the second match of the 2020 Caribbean Premier League.
Cottrell, who shared the new ball with Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir, bagged two for 16 from his four overs as the Tridents, batting first, posted 153 for nine.
The left-arm seamer first uprooted the off-stump of opener Johnson Charles in his first over for nought. He then shook up Ben Dunk with a bouncer before having the left-hander caught at point also for nought with the last ball of the over.
The ex-soldier was very economical going at just four runs per over, as he and skipper Rayad Emrit, two for 16 and Tanvir two for 25, restricted the Tridents to 153.
Captain Jason Holder top-scored with 38, while Kyle Mayers got 37 for the Tridents who then restricted the Patriots to 147 for five in 20 overs.
Player of the Match, New Zealander Mitchell Santner, was the pick of the bowlers with two for 18 from his four overs while Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan bagged two for 27.
Debutant Trinidadian batsman Joshua Da Silva was left unbeaten on a valiant 41 while Ben Dunk contributed 34.
In the opening fixture of the 2020 CPL, the Trinbago Knight Riders got the better of the Guyana Amazon Warriors by four wickets.
In the meantime, the Rovman Powell-led Jamaica Tallawahs bow into action today in the first game of another doubleheader when they take on the Daren Sammy-led St. Lucia Zouks at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
The second game sees the Amazon Warriors squaring off with the Patriots.
