Newly appointed West Indies Women's head coach Courtney Walsh said pushing back the ICC World T20 Cup from 2022 to 2023 is a blessing in disguise for the regional side.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's T20 World Cup has been moved to February 2023, with the world governing body citing the number of major events scheduled in 2022.

The competition had been scheduled to take place in South Africa at the end of 2022, with the exact dates yet to be confirmed.

It is now set to be played from February 9 to 26, 2023.

This was due to the calendar congestion in 2022, caused by the postponement of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup from February and March 2021 to the same months in 2022.

This delay was a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disrupted sporting events around the world.

Women's cricket is also making its Commonwealth Games debut in 2022, with a T20 contest in Birmingham in July and August.

Walsh, who took over the team from interim head coach Andre Coley, says the extra time will better serve the team as they try to get more cricket under their belt leading up to the qualifiers.

"The pushing back of the World Cup was a disappointment for everybody, but it could also be a blessing in disguise as it will give us a chance to get in a lot more cricket. Hopefully, we can get in a lot more tours and games leading up the World Cup once we have qualified, so that will be the focus," said Walsh.

The legendary former fast bowler says he was been planning and coordinating lots of meetings in preparation for when the team gets the green light to start training.
