Alvas Powell released by Inter Miami
National defender Alvas Powell is on the hunt for a new club as Inter Miami CF declined to offer a new contract to the 26-year-old.
The St Thomas native made just four appearances for David Beckham's Major League Soccer (MLS) side, which shifted out eight players in what is being described as a roster overhaul.
Club captain and starting goalkeeper Luis Robles and starting centre back Andres Reyes were also declined contracts for the 2021 season; the others being Mikey Ambrose, Juan Agudelo, Jerome Kiesewetter, David Norman Jr, and Denso Ulysse.
Powell, who was selected second overall by Inter Miami at last year's MLS Expansion Draft, also had stints in MLS with Portland Timbers and FC Cincinnati.
His agent, Damani Ralph, says the national defender could find himself joining another US-based club soon.
"Currently, Alvas is a free agent and we will be considering a few options, including another MLS team and teams outside of the MLS," Ralph said.
One option Powell is hoping will materialise, is to join the roster of expansion team Austin FC, which will be making their MLS debut in 2021. The Texas-based side will be able to select up to five players from other teams in the 2020 expansion draft. Inter Miami will be one of the 16 teams Austin FC will be able to select players from.
Powell will be hoping to secure a club quickly, as he would want to get in much-needed playing time, with the Reggae Boyz set for a busy 2021 schedule.
The former Portmore United defender had recently pulled out of Jamaica's squad for the two friendly internationals against Saudi Arabia after one of his teammates at Inter Miami had tested positive for COVID-19. Powell was deemed to have been compromised and was replaced in the squad by Tyreek Magee.
Powell is facing stiff competition for one of the two wide defensive positions after the emergence of Scotland-based defender Gregory Leigh who had an impressive debut for the Reggae Boyz against Saudi Arabia.
