Winning the series will be good for us – Cornwall

West Indies off-spinning all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall is hoping that the regional side can come up with the goods and get the better of the ever-improving Bangladesh side on home soil.

Following a three-nil series whitewash in the One-Day International (ODI) series, all eyes will now be cast on the West Indies Test side as they go to battle with Bangladesh in the two-match Test series, which bowls off on February 3 in Chattogram.

Before that, the regional side will get a chance to test out the Bangladesh conditions in a three-day practice game against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI, starting on Friday.

For the Antiguan Cornwall, the three weeks spent in preparation ahead of the series was critical, as the team seek to acclimatise to the conditions quickly to counter what the home side are expected to through at the visitors.

"The conditions here are not much different from those in the Caribbean, it spins a bit more here as the pitches are a bit dryer than in the Caribbean. You just have to adapt to them and play to the best of your ability," said Cornwall.

Ironically, the last time the West Indies defeated Bangladesh on their home turf, it was the seamers who did the damage back in the 2012-2013 series. Fast bowler Tino Best came out of that series with the most wickets for the West Indies with 12, including the best bowling figures of six for 40.

Compatriot Fidel Edwards, who played only one Test match on that tour, ended with seven wickets, with a best of six for 90.

The spinners on that tour, Sunil Narine and Veerasammy Permaul, bagged three and eight wickets, respectively.

With Permaul also in this latest tour party, Cornwall is hoping that the bowling unit selected for the first Test can get the team off to a good start and ultimately seal the series.

"We just have to get a win; that's first and foremost. Once we can win the series, that would be good for West Indies cricket, and we hope we can play good cricket for the fans back home," Cornwall said.
