West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican (second left) is congratulated by his teammates after picking up one of his three wickets on day one of the first Test against hosts Bangladesh in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican made a successful comeback to Test cricket, as the Barbadian was the pick of the bowlers on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Warrican, who was playing his first international match in over a year, claimed 3/58 off 24 overs to cap off a decent bowling effort from the visitors, as the home side posted 242/5 after taking the first strike.

The left-armer used his guile and control to remove top-scorer Shadman Islam (59). He also dismissed captain Mominul Haque (26), and experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (38), who was well caught low down by Rahkeem Cornwall at slip. Warrican last played in November 2019 against Afghanistan in Lucknow, India, and said he enjoyed his return to Tests.

Being disciplined

"I am pleased with my effort so far," Warrican said. "Being disciplined and being accurate, as well as setting the right fields, worked for me. The pitch is very good for batting - as the ball got older, you could see how good it is so we have to continue to work hard. I had to be disciplined to build the pressure and keep that under three runs per over."

Warrican has a habit of picking up wickets in Chattogram, as he recorded his best Test figures of 4/62 runs against the same opponents in November 2018.

The 28-year-old says the craftiness of the Bangladeshi batsmen has brought out the best in him.

"I think they played well and they kept their patience for a bit," he said. "I think as a bowling unit, we let them off the hook in the last session, but that shows how good we bowled because we were controlling the score very well."

Day three starts tonight at 10:30, Jamaica time.
