Skipper Pollard wants more ‘fight’ from players

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard hinted to journalists that the less said about Tuesday's batting performance would be the best thing for the team, as he instead wants to implore his charges to give a better showing in today's second one-day game against the Australians at the Kensington Oval.

Cricket Australia labelled the West Indies batting performance as 'Caribbean Carnage' as the regional side were blown away for a mere 123 runs chasing a Duckworth Lewis target of 257 for victory in their rain-affected contest.

The 133-run defeat was the West Indies' third largest to Australia and their biggest since 2008.

Only Pollard showed some resistance with batting 56 from 57 balls, as the home team could not recover from their horrendous position of 27 for six in the eighth over.

The fact that vice-captain Shai Hope and all-rounder Roston Chase did not participate after picking up injuries, did not help the Caribbean's side cause, as they had to call on Shimron Hetmyer to open the batting with Evin Lewis who faced only one ball.

Mitchell Starc was the man that did the damage with the new ball in the power play, and his five wickets set the tone for a clinical Aussie display in the field.

For Pollard, he is hoping that the team can shrug off the disappointment from the first game and come up with their 'A' game starting today at 1:30 p.m. Jamaica time.

"I didn't think we showed enough fight and courage. We know they are going to come hard at us as they have an experienced bowling attack and we need to fight as individuals and as a team when we are out there," said Pollard.

"We need to find a way to come up with a plan to keep them out in those first couple of overs because we know that's where the threat is. Hopefully, we can get the first and second change bowlers on quickly and see what we can do from there."

In the meantime, Pollard once again praised the efforts of leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr, who picked up a career-best five for 39 in 10 overs. Walsh Jr was not even named in the original West Indies ODI squad but was drafted in after Chase pulled out.
