Marshall inspires Portmore to Lynk Cup win

Portmore United coach Phillip Williams was elated that they benched experienced player Alex Marshall but his late introduction inspired them to a 2-1 victory over Molynes United in the first-leg Lynk Cup quarterfinals at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night.
Marshall's entrance in the 75th minute was instrumental in Portmore's victory, as his trickery and wonderful cross inside the penalty box provided Alvinus Myers with an empty goal to gracefully slot home in the 89th minute for their victory.
Earlier, captain Jeremy Nelson converted a 57th-minute penalty for Molynes to take the lead after a sloppy defensive error by Portmore's Benjamin Williams. That joy was short-lived as two minutes later, Portmore equalised through Steven Young's powerful shot inside the box, which cannoned inside the Molynes' net.
Williams was pleased with Portmore's performance while adding that Marshall showed his experience by changing the course of the game after taking the pitch.
"Most definitely, because we did some fair amount of rotation with our players, and they held their own. Alex Marshall is a game-winner, and he definitely came on and made a difference in the game," said Williams.
In the first 45 minutes of play, both teams failed to register any significant attack or maintain ball possession for any period although the defence of both was kept busy, but they eradicated meaningful attacks on goal.
The second stanza was different as chances grew exponentially for both teams.
