Jesus Gudino (front) of Waterhouse FC is fouled by Javier Brown of Portmore United during their Jamaica Premier League football match at the Ferdi Neita Sport Complex on Thursday. Waterhouse won 1-0.

Waterhouse picked up their sixth win in seven games in the Wary and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football competition as they clipped 10-man Portmore United 1-0 at Ferdi Neita Park yesterday.

Mario Simms scored the decisive goal in minute 45+9. Portmore were reduced to 10 men when Romeo Guthrie was shown a straight red card in the 75th.

In the day's other game, defending champions Cavalier picked up their second win in a row when they downed Molynes United 2-1 at Stadium East.

Christopher Ainsworth (53rd) and Daryl Massicot (73rd) made the difference for Cavalier, while Nicholas Nelson (90+3) provided a consolation effort for Molynes.

With the results, Waterhouse remain fifth in the JPL standings on 37 points, just ahead of Cavalier who are sixth on 36.

Despite the loss, Portmore remain fourth with 43, while Molynes remain firmly in the relegation battle as they sit 12th on 24.

LION'S SHARE

Waterhouse had the lion's share of opportunities in the contest and should have opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Javane Bryan.

However, his close-range effort was denied by a last-ditch goal-line clearance by Portmore's goalkeeper Daniel Russell.

Russell had no answer a second time around when Simms guided the ball to the lower-left corner with a well-taken free kick, to break the deadlock.

Waterhouse nearly had their second goal of the contest in the second half when captain Ky-Mani Campbell sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but could not find an attacker to tap home.

Portmore's afternoon ended on a sad note when Guthrie was sent for an early shower after he was shown a red card for a high boot.

Waterhouse will next turn their attention to Montego Bay United, who they will face at home on March 9, while Portmore will look to return to winning ways when they play host to Treasure Beach on March 8.
