Powerade deal surprises ‘Bunny’ Shaw
Jamaica's all-time leading goalscorer Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw concedes that she was shocked that Powerade wanted her to be a brand ambassador.
Shaw, who plays football in England's top-flight Women's Super League and is on the island preparing for the Reggae GIrlz' first-leg Olympic Games qualifier against Canada tomorrow, inked a deal with Powerade, which was announced at the ROK Hotel yesterday.
"I was back in the UK, and I got a message from my agent that Powerade was involved, and I couldn't really believe it until it came through. While going through the process, I was, 'Is it really happening?' I'm all about empowering and motivating, and I think partnering with Powerade will make that happen," Shaw shared.
Shaw, who hails from Spanish Town, added that her upbringing has allowed her to have a mindset that every time she goes on the pitch for national or club duties, she will inspire.
"I came from humble beginnings, and I know what it feels like not to have anything. Every time I go on the pitch, I try to give my best effort, because I know that young girls and boys are looking at me for inspiration; and I try to keep evolving, not only as a player, but as a person," Shaw said.
Andrew Mahfood, CEO of Wisynco Group Limited, which distributes Powerade for the internationally renowned Coca-Cola, stated that it was an easy choice to sign 'Bunny' Shaw.
"The decision was simple. Khadija is not only the greatest footballer from the Caribbean, but her sense of purpose as an individual and all the strings of awards made it a no-brainer for Coca-Cola to go after 'Bunny' and successfully get her.
"We're hoping that youngsters can have a role model at the level of Shaw and strive to become what she has become," he said.
Mahfood added that the partnership will extend beyond the playing field, with Shaw joining Powerade in community work.
"She is now the brand ambassador for Powerade, and she will represent the company in everything that she does; and as part of the Coca-Cola Company, she can go much further with them as well.
"We plan, as we do with all our brand ambassadors, to not only work with her with Powerade in sports, but we're going to be working with her in her community," Mahfood stated.
