Marcovich Brown: Racing United FC’s defensive rock and leader
Since returning from injury, the defensive brilliance and leadership of Racing United FC's captain's Marcovich Brown has helped the team to its best run in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), with three consecutive wins and a draw.
On Wednesday, the 25-year-old centre back again turned in a Man-of-the-Match performance as the Portmore club defeated Harbour View FC 1-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex for their third successive win, thanks to a Ranaldo Biggs first-half strike.
Racing United, who are now eighth in the table with 25 points, had to withstand a late onslaught from Harbour View to secure the points and Brown was pleased to be back and helping his team.
"I'm feeling great, proud of my teammates. The hard work is surely paying off," he commented.
"People had been asking when I am going to come back and all of that. The past 10 days, playing four games and getting three wins and a draw with my return (is good)," he beamed. "The team looks up to me. I have to lead and show them and my leadership speaks for itself as it shows with the results."
Continuing, he said: "We were playing entertaining football in the earlier part and weren't getting the results. The results are coming now and we hope we can get our spectators back to our games."
He said going into the second half against Harbour View, they knew they had to defend well and he knew he had to keep the team focused.
"Going into the second half I spoke with them. I called a huddle and I told them we had to keep our heads and keep focused, not to take any stupid cards and go down a man or anything like that. The word was just to be smart and defend well. They threw the kitchen sink at us in the latter part of the game as expected. They put an extra striker and pushed up another midfielder. But we had to keep the sheet clean," he stated of the win that shoved Harbour View back in relegation on 16 points, second from bottom.
Racing United will play 10th place Chapelton Maroons (20 points) in their next game on Sunday, and Brown said the intention is to keep picking up three points, especially when they play teams in the lower half of the table.
"The only way to keep this run going is to stay humble. We have to keep working hard in training and listen to our coaches. The team spirit is as high as possible right now and we just have to keep that up," he said.
"We spoke about the teams sixth and downward and to get maximum points from them. Chapelton is just below us and we want the three points from them and keep the winning streak going.
"They have skilful wingers and attackers, so it's going to be a good showdown," he added.
Even though he has not too long returned from injury, Brown was hoping to be in the Reggae Boyz squad that was announced yesterday for the Trinidad and Tobago friendlies.
Twenty-eight players, mostly based with clubs in the Jamaica Premier League, were named in the squad.
Although he did not make the cut, Brown said it means he has to work harder.
"Just coming back, I think I had a shot at it," he said, pointing out that playing for his country remains a dream.
"As a kid growing up that (national selection) is a big aspiration for me. Let's leave the selection to the selection panel and see what they do. If I get called I will be through the roof, but if not, it means I have to keep working hard and harder and show that I deserve to be in the team."
