INSPORTS football, netball set to start
The Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) All-Island Primary School Football and Netball Leagues will begin tomorrow, with the expectation that the 32 schools, who will lock horns for both the netball and football titles, will make the season enthralling.
Speaking at the recent launch at the National Stadium, Desmon Brown, interim executive director of INSPORTS, outlined that the competitions have been breeding grounds for the country's talented athletes.
"It is through these competitions that we identify talent and I can tell you that the students look forward to it. However, it is unfortunate that we can't take all the schools that we want to enter, and one of the things we're looking at is getting more sponsors from the private sector so that we can expand the competition," Brown said.
He added that sports serve the country in several aspects, including being used as a deterrent to individuals venturing into a life of crime.
"Sports are important not only to create elite athletes, but sports allow people to develop as it teaches them that they will get results from hard work. When children get involved in sports, it takes them off the streets as they don't have time to mix up with the wrong crowd, so there is also a crime prevention element to it," Brown explained.
Lecia Walters, head coach of defending netball champions St Patrick's Primary School, said her players are eager to start their title defence.
"We've been preparing for this year's competition, and I believe we are ready, so let's see what happens. The girls are excited because they saw what happened last year, and they're just focused on the title defence.
"St Patrick's is a netball school as we've won several times, and we're always excited to play netball," Walters explained.
She was among several coaches and players who turned out in their numbers for the launch.
