CWI’s Dehring, TTCB move to strengthen regional cricket ties
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
In a significant step towards fostering collaboration across the Caribbean cricketing community, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chris Dehring held a pivotal meeting with Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) President Azim Bassarath and other key executives at the Alloy Lequay Administrative Centre in Couva here yesterday.
In one of Dehring's first official visits since taking office, the parties discussed several issues, including addressing the challenges and opportunities within West Indies cricket, with a focus on strengthening the role of territorial boards in shaping the future of the sport.
Dehring, a seasoned cricket administrator, emphasised the importance of reconnecting with regional stakeholders to align CWI's vision with the realities on the ground.
"While I'm no stranger to cricket administration, the landscape of the industry is constantly evolving. It's crucial to reacquaint myself with stakeholders across the region. Each territory has its unique challenges and opportunities, and my goal is to ensure that CWI's vision resonates with the needs of our cricketing community."
During the meeting, Dehring highlighted the critical role of territorial boards in nurturing talent and building a sustainable pipeline for West Indies cricket.
"Territories are the core of West Indies cricket's production line. Rebuilding and retooling that pipeline to meet the demands of modern professional sports is a top priority. Our strength lies in our unity and shared vision, from territorial boards to players, coaches, and fans. While there may be healthy tensions at times, our collective focus must be on building strong partnerships, investing in development, and creating a sustainable structure that benefits everyone involved."
Dehring made no bones about how he plans to go about business, underscoring his commitment to collaborative leadership.
"My role is not just about making executive decisions, but about working alongside all stakeholders to shape policies and innovative strategies that will propel the game forward for generations to come. When our territories are strong, West Indies cricket is strong."
TTCB President Azim Bassarath, who also serves as vice-president of CWI, welcomed Dehring's visit and reaffirmed the TTCB's commitment to supporting CWI's initiatives.
"The TTCB extends its full support and best wishes to Chris on this important journey. This meeting underscores our shared vision and marks a significant step in ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago remains a key contributor to the regional cricketing landscape. We look forward to collaborating with CWI to develop our players, enhance facilities, and elevate the overall cricketing structure in the Caribbean. Together, we can strengthen domestic programmes and contribute to the continued success of West Indies cricket."
The engagement concluded with a tour of the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre, a facility symbolising the rich cricketing heritage, and potential, of the region.
