Holmwood girls set for 4x800m triumph
After a dominant season in the 800 metres, it would take a brave man to bet against Holmwood Technical's girls in the Championship 4x800-metre relay at this Saturday's Gibson McCook Relays at the National Stadium.
The Dave Anderson-coached team has been in exceptional form in the two-lap event this season, led by Florence Nafamba, Terrice Clarke, and the Rose sisters, Cindy and Jovi. Their strong performances have carried over into the relays, where they have convincingly beaten Edwin Allen twice -- at the Central Hurdles and Relays meet and the Western Relays.
At the Western Relays, they set a meet record of 8:49.82 and will be looking to go even faster.
Despite playing second fiddle, Edwin Allen -- who have dominated this event at the Gibson McCook Relays in recent years -- will be eager to reclaim the top spot, especially after their narrow loss to surprise winners Alphansus Davis last year. So far, they have competed without their top half-miler, Monique Stewart, who has been nursing an injury.
However, if Stewart returns to the line-up this Saturday and joins the likes of Kevongaye Fowler, Horecia Love and young Romean Gray they could stage an upset. The defending champions will also be counting on Alikay Reynolds and Tabbrel Williams to help them retain their title.
Dark horse teams in this event include Vere Technical and Sydney Pagon Academy -- especially the latter, whose half-milers have been in good form this season.
In the end, though, Holmwood Technical, a former powerhouse in this event, should return to winning ways and take the victory in a canter.
