Sir Henry Morgan marlin tourney donates to hurricane relief

February 03, 2026

The 62nd staging of the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association Annual Marlin Tournament came with a significant gesture as organisers announced they would donate their $2 million in cash prizes to Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts.

The annual three-day tournament was delayed for weeks due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which prompted the organisers to lend a helping hand following the hurricane's impact.

Maxim Rochester, chair of the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association, said they decided on donating the tournament's cash to the island's relief efforts.

He said the decision was also supported by the competitors and sponsors.

"When we had to reschedule the tournament because of Hurricane Melissa, we knew we had an opportunity to make a real difference," Rochester said.

"From that point, we decided that when the event was finally held, all cash prizes would go towards the Hurricane Melissa relief fund. I applaud the sponsors and anglers who were on board with this arrangement from the jump."

His sentiments were echoed by the tournament's major sponsor, Charles Ross, president and CEO of Sterling Asset Management.

"The Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament is one of Jamaica's most respected sporting events, and we are honoured to continue our partnership," Ross said.

"This year called for leadership and compassion. By donating the cash prizes to Hurricane Melissa relief, the tournament showed how sport can support recovery and bring people together at an important time for the country."

SAFE PASSAGE

During the competition, Team Safe Passage dominated and walked away with the Sterling Asset Management first-place trophy after catching and releasing nine marlins.

Team Integrity finished second with two marlins, while Team Prospect finished third with one.

Safe Passage also picked up wins in the individual category as Christopher Berry claimed the Male Angler Award for the most blue marlins, while Dominic Gordon landed the tournament's biggest marlin.

Integrity's Andrea Cowan won the Female Angler Award, while the Youngest Angler Award went the Ethan Lyn.

Joseph Charlebois walked away with the heaviest wahoo fish caught, while Omar Richards secured the heaviest tuna.
