Cornwall College players celebrate winning the 2026 ISSA/Burger King rural Under-16 football title at St Elizabeth Technical High School on Thursday. Cornwall defeated Glenmuir High School 4-1.

Cornwall College and Garvey Maceo High School were crowned champions of the ISSA Burger King Rural Under-16 and Under-14 football competitions, respectively, after yesterday's finals at St Elizabeth Technical High School.

Cornwall blanked Glenmuir High 4-1, while Garvey Maceo defeated Herbert Morrison Comprehensive High 4-2 in the Under-14 decider.

MoBay's Cornwall wasted little time asserting their dominance in the U16 final, breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute when Carlondo Morris scored. Morris doubled the lead in the 32nd minute, and his team stretched that advantage to 3-0 in the 47th minute courtesy of Mekhi Foster's goal. The Montego Bay-based school netted their fourth when Jared Sergeant added to the tally in the 71st minute.

Keneal Douglas scored Glenmuir's goal in the 82nd minute.

Cornwall's coach Tevin Applewhaite expressed being proud of his team.

"I'm very proud of the boys. Last year, we had a disappointing season, the Under-16s dropped out at the quarterfinals. The boys decided that they were coming out for the Under-16 title this year," he said.

Merrick Plummer, coach of Glenmuir, acknowledged the team's youthfulness.

"They did well. This was the same team that won the Under-14 title last year so there is potential. It is their first year in the Under-16 and they are a very young team," said Plummer.

Cornwall will meet Jamaica College (JC) in the all-island decider, set for Wednesday, March 18.

FIRST GOAL

Earlier in the afternoon, Kerick Clarke registered the first goal for Garvey Maceo in the sixth minute. William Knibb's Junior Gray equalised in first half added-time, and completed his brace in the 50th minute to hand the atrelawny-based School a 2-1 lead. But Garvey Maceo came roaring back courtesy of goals from Leighton Walker in the 58th minute, most valuable player (MVP) Mashall March in the 62nd, and Clarke again, at the 70th minute.

Winning coach Lester Hibbert emphasised the importance of bravery, character, and resilience, crediting the team's preparation and mental readiness for the win.

"I just asked the boys, what are we going to do, when William Knibb took the lead and got the momentum; we need to be brave, we need to fight, and we have to represent. And that's what they did, they showed true character and resilience," said Lester Hibbert, Garvey Maceo's coach.

The win gave Garvey their second hold on the ISSA Burger King rural Under-14 title and set up a date against JC in the all-island decider, also on Wednesday.
